Surgical Treatment of Herniated Lumbar Disc




Abstract
Authors have experienced 297 cases of herniated lumbar disc which were treated through classic surgical approach (laminectomy and discectomy) and followed up more than 1 year from Sep. 1975 to Aug. 1991.
The results of the study are guided of treatment of herniated lumbar disc. 297 Patients received classic surgical treatment. The ratio between male to female was 21 : 1 and the cases of the third and fourth decades were occupied 52% of the total
patients.
Most frequent chief compliant was back pain (94%) and radiating pain to leg was also frequent (89%). On physical examination, rate of positive straight leg raising test were 93%. The diagnostic accuracy of myelogram was high (87%) and it was
increased
to 95% by CT scan,
The disc herniation of L4-5 was most common (70.7%) and on the operation, the annulus discal bulging were found in 75.4% of the patients and the definite discal ruptures ruptures were found found in 22.9% of the patients. Among 297 patients. the
excellent and good results comprised 91.9%.
